Bern, the capital of Switzerland home city of the UIAA, played host to the second round of the UIAA Ice Climbing Continental Cup season on Saturday 30 November.
Action took place at the O’Bloc Climbing venue. In the men’s competition, a total of 46 athletes from ten countries competed. Success went to the only athlete to top the route – 23-year old Swiss climber Jonathan Brown. His Swiss Alpine Club teammate Benjamin Bosshard, 22, took silver with bronze going to 18-year old Konstantin Wille of Liechtenstein. None of the three medallists from the first round of the season in Slovakia faired better than eleventh place.
Swiss success was also ensured in the women’s event. A total of 23 athletes from 11 countries participated. In the eight athlete final, six climbers topped the route meaning positions came down to the time it took to ascend successfully. The fastest was Franziska Schönbächler, 27, who saw off the challenge of her Swiss teammate Vivien Labarile, 25, and France’s Marion Salmon-Thomas, 29. Like the men’s competition, there was no podium finish for any of the medallists from the season opener in Zilina. However both Haruko Takeuchi and Annick Teepe, gold and bronze last week, made the final.
